Kiehle Library opened its doors in the fall of 1952, replacing the Old Model School as the campus library. Named in honor of St. Cloud State's second president David Kiehle, Kiehle was the first campus building specifically constructed to house the library.

Kiehle served as the campus library until Centennial Hall opened in May 1971. In 1974, Kiehle, after extensive renovation, became home for the Department of Art and renamed the Kiehle Visual Arts Center.
