By 1958, the rapid expansion of the St. Cloud State campus was beginning and the opening of Mitchell Hall marked the start. Thanks mostly in part of the Baby Boomers, St. Cloud State's physical and academic growth intensified over the next 15 years.

Flag 1: Thomas J. Gray Campus Laboratory School construction. Opened in the fall of 1958, the building replaced Riverview as the location of the campus laboratory school. The school itself closed in the spring of 1983, repurposed, an addition added, and renamed the Engineering and Computing Center (ECC). The original building was named in honor of alum, faculty member, and president Thomas J. Gray.

Flag 2: Brown Hall construction began in the fall of 1958. The building opened in January 1960.

Flag 3: Mitchell Hall mostly complete. Named in honor of William B. Mitchell, the main part of the building had been opened and the addition was still under construction in this image.
