Richard R. Green
Biography
Richard Reginald Green was born May 27, 1936 in Minnifree, AR. At the age of two, he moved to Minneapolis, where he grew up and attended school. In 1960, he married Gwen Tolbert and they had four children. He received a bachelor's degree from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, a master of science in special education at St. Cloud State University in 1968, and a doctoral degree in Educational Administration from Harvard.
Green began working as a teacher and administrator for Minneapolis Public Schools in 1959. He was the principal of North Community High School from 1974 to 1976 and also the superintendent starting in 1976. In 1988, he became the chancellor of the New York City Public Schools, where he worked until his death in 1989. He also served on the board of directors of Minneapolis United Way and the Minneapolis YMCA as well as a trustee for Carleton College in Northfield, MN. He received a Distinguished Alumni Award from both Augsburg College and St. Cloud State University. Green was also named to the Athletic Hall of Fame at Augsburg. Green died May 10, 1989, in New York from asthma complications.

The Richard R. Green House, named after alum Richard R. Green, has occupied three different homes on campus since its naming in 1989 – 416 5th Street South (1989-1991), 809 4th Avenue South (1991-2008), and 827 4th Avenue South (2008-present). As of 2017, the Dr. Richard R. Green house serves as home to the Multicultural Student Services.
