Trivial Facts

  • Legendary question writer Gary Burt retired, saying the contest was becoming too much work as well as too professionalized and serious rather than laid back and fun like the early years. He was replaced by a new "trivia goddess," Marie Richardson.
  • Team Trivia Newton John was awarded Best Team Name and team OJ's Pulp Fiction earned the Good Intentions Long Distance award after they dropped out of the contest because they lost KVSC's reception in the Twin Cities.
  • Team Gee-Dee-Eye was a team rumored to consist solely of someone's cat.
  • Computer use was becoming controversial. KVSC's rules stated that the contest was for fun and "the use of electronic mediums should be constrained."
  • One participant from a team with Internet access said the computer did not help with even one question and only tied up a phone line.

Memorable Quotes:

~  "We've been known to ask inmates the answers to questions. They watch a lot of TV shows," Lynn Jensen, team Pigs 'R Us (all from the Stearns County Sheriff's Department) (Chronicle, January 24, 1995)
~  "The cat kept trying to answer and couldn't pick up the receiver," KVSC alumnus Patrick Kaye, Gee-Dee-Eye spokesperson (Chronicle, February 7, 1995)
~  "Who knows, in five years, the whole contest could be different. It could be elitist with the winners being whoever can work on the computer the fastest," Jo McMullen, KVSC station manager (St. Cloud Times, February 2, 1995)
