Central Minnesota is home to a large east African community. Those residents became students and have impacted society, culture, and education on campus and beyond.

The first verified St. Cloud State student of color was Ruby Cora Webster. She attended for one single year and graduated in 1910. Other students of color followed Webster but numbered a handful. These included American Indians, Black Americans, and Asian Americans.

The numbers of students, faculty, and staff of color have gone from a sprinkling in the mid-20th century to a significant portion of the campus population today. Many serve as catalysts of change, sharing their perspectives and pushed campus not only to increase its diversity, but to ensure all who come are welcome to the same opportunities.
