Study in Denmark Meeting Draws Large Crowd – January 16, 1973

As St. Cloud State grew, the academic experience and expectations shifted. Students desired to study abroad and the university sought to provide options as the 1970s approached.

January 16, 1973

On January 11, 1973, 300 students packed a meeting to learn more about study abroad. As a result, 109 students spent the 1973-74 academic year in Fredericia, Denmark, as the first university-sponsored study abroad program.

Study abroad program choices grew quickly and prospered. Thousands of St. Cloud State students took advantage to travel and study in different countries. The program continues today with opportunities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Taiwan, and Costa Rica.

Study abroad allowed students to navigate new cultures, learn and speak different languages, work with new people, be exposed to new perspectives, and make lifelong connections.
