Women Take the Field

Women’s Hockey on the Move – February 5, 1998

St. Cloud State women’s athletics was in line to receive a major boost. The Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission offered a $250,000 grant funded by the state legislature. Though the funding fell through, the university ultimately received $200,000 to jump start a fall 1998 debut.

Women’s athletics has a long history at St. Cloud State. Without varsity competition, female students organized themselves through the Women’s Recreation Association for sporting and social activities. As 1970 approached, women’s athletics was able to offer opportunities to compete inter-collegiately as well as learn new skills, make connections with other athletes, and entertain the community.

Thanks to faculty member Gladys Ziemer, and later Title IX, early inter-collegiate women varsity sports were organized such as basketball, softball, and volleyball. Over time, other sports were added including tennis, track, cross country, soccer, and hockey.
