Flights of Terror – September 12, 2001
The events of September 11, 2001 dramatically changed the world. In a special issue, it is one of the only front pages in The Chronicle’s print run devoted solely to one current event. No extra words were needed – the image tells the story.
In the past 100 years, The Chronicle reported on many local, state, and national current events that impacted campus. The headline “Remember Purl Harder” in January 1942 noted the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor and the nation’s entry into World War II.
Other notable events reported on were Martin Luther King’s assassination in April 1968, local Vietnam War protests of the late 1960s and early 1970s, musician John Lennon’s murder in December 1980, and Jacob Wetterling’s kidnapping in nearby St. Joseph in October 1989.
